Fire bellows have been used for centuries to rekindle or help start fires through introducing extra air to the fuel. Air is drawn in to the bellows through a valve which expands the leather, then forced through the nozzle when the leather is compressed.
Each bellow is handcrafted using elm wood, the grain and features of elm are very distinctive, no two pieces of wood and therefore no two pairs of bellows are the same. Commissions can be undertaken in other hardwoods.
We use a variety of colours and types of leathers. The main leather is bovine full grain, but more exotic leathers like ostrich and deer hide can be very effective. In 2009 we launched a range of bellows using tartan, examples of which can be seen throughout the website, please ask to see samples that we are currently stocking. Unfortunately we can't stock every clan tartan but are quite happy for clients to supply their own tartan.
The bellows are then finished off with a brass or polished stainless steel nozzle, a strap at the handle end to hold it together, and a hole in one handle so you can hang them up.
Due to popular demand we are now making stands for bellows.
The stands are handcrafted like the bellows using elm wood and are finished in the same way as the bellows, so complementing them beautifully.
The stands measure approx 20 x 20 cm for the larger bellows and 15 x 15 cm for the smaller bellows.
Each stand has a steel rod in the centre onto which you place the nozzle.
They have either 4 straight sides with routered edges or we do more rustic ones with one unsawn edge, as can be seen in the photos. They are simple to use and very stable.
Our bellows are named after Scottish Islands to remind us – and you – of our beautiful Scottish heritage and home. They are shown below with prices and dimensions. Please click each image to enlarge it and see more detail. |
